I used to join in with Stacking the Shelves, and post book hauls every couple of weeks. I haven’t done it for ages so I thought I’d update you all on the books I’ve acquired.

Bear in mind that I did not BUY all of these…some are from publishers. Although I do concede that my book-buying habit is out of control lately. I blame it on still being on holidays from uni. All that will change soon, though.

NIGHT SWIMMING – Goats, crop circles, f/f romance, hilarious narrator. What more could you want? I loved this one!

GROWING UP ASIAN IN AUSTRALIA – a collection of essays from all over Australia. Actually, a girl who is an alumnus of my high school wrote one of the stories. Anyway, I’ve been meaning to get this for ages.

GOODBYE DAYS – reading this now and it’s really, really good. Terribly sad, but really great mental illness rep.

HARRY POTTER A L’ECOLE DES SORCIERS – I’m starting French this year so I’ve bought a French copy of HP. I’ll probably have to look up every second word, but that’s fine by me.

THE INEXPLICABLE LOGIC OF MY LIFE – YESSSSS.

NOWHERE NEAR YOU – Sequel to Because You’ll Never Meet Met

NOT YOUR SIDEKICK – I’ve heard nothing but good things about this one! Plus – superheroes.

QUEENS OF GEEK – SO STOKED to have an arc of this!! It looks incredible.

WHERE YOU’LL FIND ME – I haven’t heard much about this one but it’s really pretty :’)

SEVEN DAYS OF YOU – I’ve heard iffy things about the Japanese rep so we’ll see how it goes.

THE PEARL THIEF – ELIZABETH WEIN OH MY GOSHHHH. It’s like a prequel to Code Name Verity.

STARGAZING FOR BEGINNERS – I love space and stars. And Jenny McLachlan. Should be great.

HIDDEN FIGURES – Um, after the brilliance of that movie, I can’t wait to get started on this.

Plus I was all “treat yoself” and bought myself some Puffins.

Mainly because I’ve been doing some supervision shifts at work, which 1) stress me out and 2) pay better than normal shifts, so I decided I’d buy myself a present. Or, you know, eight. But they’re not ridiculously expensive so I don’t feel too bad about it.

In life updates, I’m starting uni again this week!

Due to the fact that my uni stuffed up my timetable, I’m going to be there four days a week. Oh, the joy. My subjects are Foundations in International Studies, French Language and Culture 1, and Strategic Public Relations. All of them sound much more intense than last year. Yikes. We have to create a campaign for a real client, learn French quick-smart, and read a LOT for international studies. Plus, I had to actually buy textbooks. What is this life.

But on the plus side, I’m now a junior marketing exec for the best society at our university (obviously). Since I did almost nothing extra-curricular last year, I’m really excited to meet some cool new people and help out with events, publicity etc. It’s going to be a fun year.

In terms of writing?

I’m still going with my rewrite of How to Hug a Grizzly. It’s actually longer than when I started this draft – it’s almost 80,000 words now, yikes. But I think it’s a lot stronger. Hopefully soon I’ll be passing it to some more beta readers.

I was also going to be querying Once Upon a Madness (my Alice retelling) but I kind of…haven’t got around to it. Maybe next month. But I’m not in any hurry.

Meanwhile on Instagram…

I’ve been hovering at 14.9k for a while and it’s really bugging me. Hopefully by the time this posts I’ll be at 15, but it won’t hurt to follow me anyway 😉 There are lots of books and cats.

So anyway. That’s what’s currently going on. It’s been raining for a solid two weeks and I’m happy with it as long as I’m inside (although the four cats are going a bit stir-crazy…). Making my way through Paradise Lost and a book idea is starting to form. Trying out new vegetarian recipes (my ramen is getting pretty good, I have to say). Working. Repeat.

It’s life updates day today, I’ve decided, so I want to hear all about you! What’s going on in your life? Let’s start a sharing circle and sing Kumbaya, it’ll be great fun.
